Franklinton, N.C. --  William Eugene Cathcart, 50, formerly of Greenville, died Thursday. He was formerly employed with Pilot Manufacturing Company of Raleigh. 

Surviving are his wife, Hilda Ramey Cathcart; daughter, Sharon Cathcart of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Peggy Pleasants of North Carolina; stepson, Sidney Seal of Raleigh; father, Willis O. Cathcart of Mebane; sister, Mrs. James A. Wilson of Burlington; and brothers, Bob Cathcart and Willis O. Cathcart, Jr., both of Greenville, S.C.

 Graveside services will be at 10:30a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Memorial Park.  -- Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.

BURLINGOTN, N.C. - Dorothy Evelyn Cathcart Wilson, 58, of 2578 Hyde Street, formerly of Greenville, S.C., died Jan 27, 1987

She was an employee of Gulp Weaving and a member of Hall River First Baptist Church of Hall River. 

Surviving are her husband, James A. Wilson of the home; a son, Barry David Wilson of the home; her father, Willis Cathcart of Mebane, N.C.; and two brothers, Willis Cathcart Jr. and Bob Cathcart, both of Greenville.   

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel, Burlington, with her burial in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Bobby Lee Cathcart

Bobby Lee Cathcart, 64, of 24 Mitchell Road, died March 12, 1995, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center after a period of declining health. 

He was the retired owner of Al Cart Top Shop, a member of East North Street Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. 

Surviving as his wife, Barbara Phillips Cathcart of the home; a son, Tim L. Cathcart of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Julie C. Wilson of Spartanburg; and a brother, W.O. Cathcart Jr. of Greenville

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Wood Mortuary, Greer, with burial in East North Street Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to East North Street Baptist Church, 4108 E. North St. Extension, Greenville, S.C. 29615. 

The family will be at the home.

 

 

 

Henry Tarrant, Greenville 
Henry Tarrant, 70, husband of Meredith Harden Tarrant, of 11 Trafalgar Road, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late James Wesley and Carrie Lee Rice Tarrant.

A graduate of Furman University, he was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church, where he had served as Sunday school teacher and as deacon. He was a member of "Hesed" Sunday school class Senior Adult Group and "Young At Heart."

Mr. Tarrant was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and was a former employee of Kemet Corp., where he worked for 25 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cindy Tarrant, of Allen, Texas; sons, Jimmy Tarrant, and wife, Connie, of Travelers Rest, and David Tarrant, and wife, Suzanne, of Columbia; granddaughters, Gabrielle and Michaela Tarrant, of Travelers Rest; his stepmother, Mary Hallback Tarrant, of Greenville; and sisters, Edna Culbertson and Pat Tarrant, both of Greenville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sans Souci Baptist Church. Burial will be at Graceland East Memorial Park.

The family is at the residence.

Virginia Jewell Stokes, 69, of 202 Chandler St., Sans Souci, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Adge and Ola Marie Howard Jewell. She was a graduate of Parker High School and retired from Upton's Department Store. She was an active member of Parisview Baptist Church and the Agape Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Haskell L. Stokes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Delbra "Del" and Charles Roddy and Jewell and John Montieth, all of Greenville; four grandchildren, Michael, Hope, Darren and Chris; two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Sean; a sister, Janie Reed of Myrtle Beach; and a brother, Donald Jewell of Myrtle Beach.

 Burial: Graceland Cemetery, West.

Mildred Landreth Clayton, Mauldin
Mildred Landreth Clayton, 74, of National Health Care of Mauldin, formerly of Fairlane Drive, died Monday, May 21, 2001.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late George W. and Hattie Lee Smith Landreth. She was the widow of Roy A. Clayton. She was a graduate of Parker High School and was retired from Macshore Classics. She was a member of Standing Springs Baptist Church, Simpsonville.

Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, Gary and Louise Clayton of Fountain Inn, and Paul Clayton of Murrells Inlet; three grandchildren, Lamar Clayton, Patricia Moore and Lisa Lawrence; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ollie Davis, Marie Poole and Virginia McCullough, all of Greenville.

 Burial: Woodlawn Memorial Park.

 

E.E. 'Buddy' Williams Sr., Greenville 
Ernest E. "Buddy" Williams, 79, of 103B Mount Vista Ave., formerly of Briarcliff Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Walter W. and Agnes West Williams and predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Payne Williams. Educated in Greenville County Schools, he graduated in the Class of 1939 at Parker High School, where he earned the nickname "screwball." He attended USC until his enlistment in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a staff sergeant during World War II and served in the European Theatre as a nose gunner on a B24. His plane was shot down on Palm Sunday, 1943. He was a POW at Stalag XVII, where he remained until the end of the war. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Civil Air Patrol, and James F. Daniel Jr. American Legion Post #3. A retiree of textiles in sales and the owner of E.E. "Buddy" Williams Oil Company, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Sandra W. Hammond of Pawleys Island, Rebecca W. Hansen of Greenville, and Suzanne W. Cecil of Spartanburg; four sons, Michael E. Williams, David R. Williams, Anthony A. "Tony" Williams, and Ernest E. "Buddy" Williams II all of Greenville; sisters, Ruth W. Bradshaw of Beaufort, Barbara W. Shaw and Shirley W. Rudisill, both of Greenville; brother, Walter "Jack" W. Williams Jr. of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Darryl J. Hammond II, Wendy N. Hammond, Stacey J. Clardy, Ashley R. Williams, D. Austin Williams, Chandler R. Williams, J. Gregory Smith-Williams, A. Visitation will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family is at the home of a sister, Barbara Shaw, 101 Mount Vista Ave.

Frances Owenby Ridgeway, 77, of 304 Lowndes Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at St. Francis Women's & Family Hospital.

Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Evie Ellis Owenby. She was a graduate of Parker High School and the University of Florida and was a licensed dietitian. She was retired from Piedmont Nursing Center.

She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and a former member of McCarter Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Otis E. Ridgeway Jr.; a daughter, Rita Gail R. Merritt of Greenville; sons, Lanny E. Ridgeway of Windsor, N.C., and Tim A. Ridgeway of Simpsonville; grandchildren, Debbie Elmore, Lanny (Pat) E. Ridgeway Jr., Greg Merritt, and Michael Babb; great-grandsons, Trace Merritt and Michael Babb J.; and a sister, Jessie O. Hardin of Greenville

William Davis "Dub" Jones, 74, of Old Buncombe Road, died Friday, June 1, 2001, following a period of declining health.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Samuel Bennett and Willie Mae Freeman Jones. He was a graduate of Parker High School and Attended Bob Jones University. He was an employee of Michelin Tire Corp. before his retirement, and recently owned Coach Charter Inc. He was a member of Calvary First Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys Garrett Jones; two sons, William Daniel "Dan" Jones of Easley, and Michael S. "Mike" Jones of Greenville; two sisters, Mary J. Turner of Taylors, and Cecil J. Morgan of Roebuck; two brothers, R.B. Jones of Waterloo, and Bobby S. Jones of Greer; and two grandsons, Michael Matthew Jones and Jacob Chandler Jones.

 

William M. Henderson, Greenville
William Mason Henderson, 86, of 9 Wiuka Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Archie League and Ida Boggess Henderson, and was reared by his stepmother, the late Cora Julian Henderson. He was a graduate of Parker High School and owned and operated Henderson's Upholstery on Augusta Road before retirement. He was a member of Triune United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Vernon Henderson; sisters, Wilma H. Haynes, Mary H. Burns, Vivian H. Hudgens, Helen H. Traynham, and Rachel H. Christy, all of Greenville, and Lucille H. McKeen of Grafton, W.Va.; and brothers, Archie L. Henderson of Greenville, and Harry J. Henderson of Simpsonville. He was predeceased by a twin brother, Wesley B. Henderson.

Gerald Dacus Vaughn, 65, of 3533 Geer Highway, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000.

Graduate: Parker High School. Retired: Antique refinisher. Member: Poe Baptist Church.

Survivors: daughters, Latrelle V. Pack of Simpsonville, Jodi V. Hubel of Greenville, and Dede V. Cannon of Travelers Rest; a son, J. Scott Vaughn of Travelers Rest; mother, Inez Leathers Vaughn of Greenville; a brother, Kenneth Vaughn of Taylors; and three grandchildren. Predeceased: father, Clarence O. Vaughn.

Randolph Cason, 89, of 309 Coachman Drive, died Friday, March 2, 2001.

Born in Greenville, he was a sonof the late William Randolph and Elma Clary Cason. He was a graduate of Parker High School and owner of Cason Automotive Repair.

Mr. Cason was a member of Bellview Baptist Church in Woodruff, and was with the CCC camp during World War II. He was a member of ASC.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Crosby Cason; a daughter, Teresa Cason of Simpsonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randolph D. and Anna Cason of Greenville, and Rick and Cheryl Cason of Woodbridge, Va.; a stepson, Samuel E. Crosby of Martin, Ga.; two sisters, Catherine C. Ward of Greenville, and Doris C. Freeman of Fountain Inn; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lucile Hall Cason; a son, William A. Cason; a sister, Mrs. Reese (Mary Lou) Lockee; and two brothers, William Cason and Charles H. Cason

Betty Lee Seigler Mathis, 72, of 118 Irene Circle, widow of Carl Fulton Mathis, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999.

Graduate: Parker High School. Retired: Poe Mill. Member: Parisview Baptist Church.

Survivors: son, Carl Mathis; sister, Ollie Sisk; brothers, James Seigler and R.C. Seigler; and several nieces and nephews, all of Greenville.

Graveside service: 3:30 p.m. Friday at Graceland Cemetery, West, with visitation at the graveside after the service.

Robert L. Pinson Sr., age 84, of Surfside Beach, died Saturday, May 25, 2002.
Mr. Pinson is a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School and Parker High School '34.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of Gordon and Beatrice McCall. Graduate: Parker High School.

Survivors: A son, Jeff Honeycutt of Norman; a daughter, Kim Jennings of Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Wendell Agee of Seneca, Gendell Shannon of Greenville, and Frances Vance of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Marion McCall of Greenville; and three grandchildren.

Della Waldrop Bips, 78, widow of John H. Bips, of Donington Drive, formerly of 22 Twin Springs Drive for 30 years, died April 10, 2001, after a long battle with emphysema.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late William E. Waldrop Sr. and Hattie King Waldrop.

Mrs. Bips was a graduate of Parker High School and Draughn's Business College, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was a retired shoe buyer for Belk and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Raymond D. (Mildred) Hunt and her son, Dan Hunt, and Mrs. Michael D. (Cecilia) Burnette and her children, Lauren and Scott Burnette; nieces, Martha Harbin, Paula Hathcox, Susan Pruitt, Peggy Sublett, Kathy Camerlingo, Debbie Reitemeyer, Patricia Cathcart, and Nancy Lesa; and nephews, Steve Kelly, Joey Kelly, James Long, Robert Long, Louis Lee, and Eddie Lee.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Ruth Kelly, Martha Lee, Anne Rietemeyer, and Grace Waldrop; and three brothers, Haskell, Paul and Elmore Waldrop.

Fredric C. Wood, Mauldin
Fredric Charles Wood, 64, of 318 Daniel Court, Mauldin, died June 27, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Charles B. and Mary Frances Key Wood. Fred was a 1954 graduate of Parker High School, and was currently a buyer for Belks' Department Stores. He was a member of Northeast Church of Christ.

Surviving are two daughters, Rhonda W. Little and her husband John, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Stacey Marie Wood of Simpsonville; two sisters, Barbara W. Bassett of Greer, and Deborah W. Stribling of Orangeburg; two brothers, Stephen K. Wood of Mauldin, and Carlton J. Wood of Pauline; two grandchildren, Joseph C. Little and Kerry A. Little; and a very close friend, Evelyn Deavers, of Powdersville.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Northeast Church of Christ by Messrs Carl Lancaster and Danny Glymph.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Greer, where he will be laid to rest beside his youngest brother, Randall J. Wood.
 

Luther Howard Jr., Greenville
Luther Howard Jr., 72, husband of Bobbie Brooks Howard, of 302 Rogers Ave., Greenville, S.C., passed away Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Pendleton Manor Assisted Living Facility.

Born in Piedmont, S.C., he was a son of the late Luther and Nina (Tennie) Howard of Poe Mill. Mr. Howard was a 1946 graduate of Parker High School. He worked 31 years for the United States Postal Service at the West Washington Street office before retiring.

Mr. Howard was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He served with the 24th Infantry Division, 5th Regimental Combat Team, and the 7th Armored Division. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, one for the battle of Seoul, South Korea, and a second with Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds received in battle at Chuktac-ri, North Korea.

Mr. Howard was a member of Sam Poe Masonic Lodge No. 284, American Legion Post No. 3, and a member of the Heritage Class and Bethel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bobbie Brooks Howard; a son, Curtis and daughter-in-law, Julie Howard of Clinton; twin granddaughters, Ashley and Lindsey Howard of Clinton.

He was predeceased in death by his parents, and a sister, Willie Mae Allen.

Service will be held in Graceland Cemetery, on June 12, 2000, with Masonic Rites. The body is at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, where the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 11, 2000.

Carlos Thomas Scott, 75, died Monday, June 25, 2001.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late John Thomas and Lula Montgomery Scott. A graduate of Parker High School, he was retired from Southern Bell after 37 years of service. Mr. Scott was a member of Laurens Road United Methodist Church, Walden Lodge No. 274 A.F.M., Hejaz Temple of the Shrine, the Senior Golf Association, Pioneers of Southern Bell, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Pat Stiller Scott; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim S. Standridge, and Missi and Andy Ross, all of Greenville; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny R. and Debbie Scott, of Mauldin; a sister, Louise S. McDowell, of Seneca; a brother, David M. Scott, of Plano, Texas; six grandchildren; and friends, Randy and Suzanne Laney and family, of Hill Air Force Base, Utah

Ruby Taylor Linn, 84, formerly of Crescent Hill Drive, wife of the late William Harold Linn Sr., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Pendleton Manor in Greenville.

Mrs. Linn was born in Fountain Inn, daughter of the late David F. and Carrie Fair Taylor. She was a graduate of Parker High School and Draughn's Business College. She was retired from Pickens County School District and was a member of First Baptist Church of Pickens.

Surviving are one son, William H. Linn Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Greer; one daughter, Janitt L. Smith and her husband, Roger, of Jefferson; four grandchildren, Kimberly Mangum, Bryan Smith, Brad Linn and Andy Linn; one great-grandchild, Kylie Grace Mangum; and three brothers, Beverly Taylor, Bill Taylor and Delmus Taylor, all of Greenville.

Mrs. Linn was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Dwight Taylor and Riley Taylor.

Dr. Fred E. Holcombe, age 81, of 301 Liberty St., and widower of Lillian Speake Holcombe, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Laurens County Hospital.

He was born in Pickens County, and was a son of the late John Clark and Lois Naomi Smith Holcombe.

Dr. Holcombe was a graduate of Parker High School and of Furman University. Following his education at Furman, he enlisted in the Navy Air Cadet Program in Pensacola, Fla., where he received his pilot wings. He then served his country during World War II as a Navy pilot.

Following the war, Dr. Holcombe continued his education and received his doctorate from Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He began his optometry practice in Greenville in 1947, and moved his practice to Clinton in 1948, where he continued his work in optometry for the next 52 years.

Dr. Holcombe's past civic activities and duties included Past President of the Clinton Lions Club, Chairman of the March of Dimes for Laurens County, member and past deacon of First Baptist Church, Past Commander of Legion Post 56, member of the Charleston Historical Society, and was a member of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina.

He was a published author and lecturer as well as the foremost authority on early South Carolina Pottery.

In 1968 he began a life-long journey documenting the tangible history of South Carolina. This included numerous excavations in downtown Charleston, and in old pottery sites located throughout the state.

It was during this time that Dr. Holcombe and his family documented thousands of artifacts discarded by the forefathers of this state. His quest to chronicle this past continued until his death. Artifacts from the Holcombe family collection are currently on public exhibit and a future exhibit is planned.

Surviving are two sons, Joe Leake Holcombe of Clinton, Fred Edward "Scooter" Holcombe II and his wife, Janet Hamer Holcombe, of Cary, N.C.; one brother, Dr. Eddie C. Holcombe of Beaufort; one sister, Grace Smith of Greenville; and two grandsons, Fred Edward Holcombe III and Joe Hamer Holcombe, both of Cary.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Rosemont Cemetery

Loy Wagner, Williamston 
Loy Eugene Wagner, 80, of 102 Dacus Drive, husband of June Matteson Wagner, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Robert Oland and Mary Tune Wagner. He was a World War II Naval veteran, retired band director at Easley High School, and a member of Williamston First BaptistChurch where he taught Sunday School for many years.

A graduate of Parker High School and East Carolina University, he taught music in the South Carolina Public Schools for 33 years. He was a charter member and former president of the South Carolina Band Directors Association and was an inductee into the South Carolina Band Directors Association's Hall of Fame.

Recently Mr. Wagner was presented with the Order of the Palmetto and a concurrent resolution by the South Carolina General Assembly. He was a recipient of the "Keys to the City" of Williamston.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Patrice and Wade H. Alley Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, Richard C. Wagner, Stephen L. Wagner of Greenville, Christopher C. Wagner of Williamston; and grandchildren, Betsy Alley and Jonathan Alley of Chapel Hill, N.C.

He was predeceased by brothers, Robert Wagner and Cecil Wagner.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Brad Bardin, Mr. Ronnie Ward and Mr. George Rush officiating.

Deloris Morgan Smith, Greenville
Deloris Morgan Smith, 69, wife of James E. Smith, of 103 Wild Turkey Way, died May 24, 2002.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late George Franklin and Hazel Nix Morgan.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the 1951 class of Parker High School, and retired from Southern Bell in 1985 after 32 years of service. She was a member of Calvary First Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Chandra Smith, of Easley; two brothers, Bill Morgan of Taylors and Ben Morgan of Greenville; and three grandchildren, Heather, Heidi and Heath Smith.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with the Rev. Gary Rogers and the Rev. Dr. Roger Couch officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

 

Harold Thomas Jamison, Greenville
Harold Thomas Jamison, 57, of 5 West Sable Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of Harold Frank and Cleo Justus Jamison of Greenville. He attended Parker High School and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of Agnew Road Baptist Church, Sam Poe Masonic Lodge #284 A.F.M., and the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 439. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later served in the S.C. National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa J. Whitlock, and a son, James David Jamison, both of Greenville; brothers, James Robert Jamison of Greenville, and David Michael Jamison of Cable, Wis.; and five grandchildren.

Joann Hunter, 66, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus, Okla.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Fred E. and Ethel Howard Marchbanks. Graduated: Parker High School in Greenville. Member: Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W.

Survivors: husband, Jim Hunter; daughters, Elaine Hunter of Norman, Okla., Sheila LaFerney of Altus, and Lisa Drury of Olustee, Okla.; a son, R. Craig Hunter of Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters, Donna Helms of Easley, and Freda Hudson of Charleston; and eight grandchildren. Predeceased: a daughter, Dawn Marie.

Jimmy Tooke Farrow, Greenville 
Jimmy Tooke Farrow, 71, of 31 Butternut Drive, died Saturday, May 5, 2001.

Born in Greenville and grew up in the Dunean Community, he was a son of the late Willie Lee and Maxine Tooke Farrow.

Mr. Farrow was a Parker High Graduate and retired from Peoples Life Insurance Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict.

Jimmy was known for his ability to recall names, faces and family lineage through generations. He found great pleasure in meeting and talking with people.

Mr. Farrow was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church, a Deacon and a member of the Adult II Sunday School Class.

He was a loving husband of 49 years and a devoted father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Sybil Paul Farrow, of the home; two daughters, Jan D. "Gigi" Farrow of Jacksonville, Fla., and Staci Farrow Scroggs of Greenville; one son and daughter-in-law, Alan B. "Skip" and Christie Farrow, of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Wilma Farrow Todd and her husband Ernest, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy K. Farrow, of Greenville; five grandchildren, Justin, Katie and Emily Farrow, Kinsey and Carson Scroggs; one great-grandson, Thomas Monisky. In his last days he was most comforted making memories with his grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm Billy Farrow.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Washington Avenue Baptist Church, with burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

William Edward Thompson, Easley
William Edward Thompson, 71, of Powdersville, passed away Tuesday evening, Dec. 26, 2000, after a one-year battle with leukemia. He died at Greenville Memorial Hospital with his family around him.

 

He was born and raised in the MillsMill Village, the son of the late William "Bill" and Hazel McJunkin Thompson. He attended Mills Mill grammar school and graduated from Parker High School in 1946.

He was employed by Mills Mill from 1946-1955, then moved on to being a self-employed home building contractor for 45 years. He was a member of S.C. Residential Builders Association. He built many homes in the area, made many friends, and was well respected in this business since 1960.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Rollins Thompson; two sons, Steve and his wife, Sophia, Larry and his wife, Linda; and two daughters, Jean and her husband, John Bellack, and Barbara Turner. Also, a brother, M. Darrell Thompson of Lexington. He was predeceased by a brother, Fred and his wife, Pat. He left seven grandchildren, Gina Thompson of Savannah, Ga., Jodi Whitfield, Jade Bellack, William and Michelle Thompson, and Stephen and Brandon Turner. Also, two great-grandchildren, Phillip Whitfield and Chase Turner. He enjoyed that most of his family lived close by and he was proud of them all.

He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Piedmont for the past 23 years, where he had served as Sunday School teacher, finance committee chairman, deacon and chairman of deacons. The previous 15 years he was a member of Grove Baptist Church and served in many positions of leadership there. He was selected to serve on pulpit committees in both churches. In his early years, he attended Tremont Avenue Church of God.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rehoboth Baptist Church. Services will be conducted by the Revs. John Revis, Huford Cash, Robert Harris, and his pastor, the Rev. Niki Ballew. Honorary pallbearers will be Winfred Crone, Jack Atkins, Ben Allen, Wayne Edens, Howard Mosteller, Pete Rollins, Don Rogers, Charles Owens, Clarence Lovett, Robert Rice, Tommy Bennett, and Dick Rollins.

The family will receive friends before the funeral service at Rehoboth Family Life Center from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Burial will be private for the family at Graceland Cemetery.

George Claborn "Skeet" Sentell, 69, of 4 Morningwood Lane, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at his residence.

Member: Baptist faith. Graduated from Parker High School and two years of college at the University of South Carolina. He was co-owner of She and He Hair Designs in Greenville and the Scissor Hut in Anderson. Also, a member of the Sam Poe Lodge No. 284 A.F.M. and the Hejaz Shrine, York and Scottish Rites, and was a member of the lightweight motor unit and air squadron unit. He served in the U.S. Navy four years and the U.S.A.F. eight years during the Korean War.

Survivors: wife, Maxine Ballenger Sentell of the home; a son, Frank Sentell of Porterville, Calif.; a brother, Jackie Sentell of Westminster; six grandchildren and eight great-grands.

Leonard Jerome Thackston Sr., 77, died at Oakmont Nursing Home East on Feb. 26, 2000.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Albert J. and Lillie Mae McCauley Thackston.

He was retired after 43 years of service at J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Welsh Thackston of the home, a daughter, Kathy T. Sheriff-White and her husband, Dennis, a son, Leonard J. "Jerry" Thackston II and his wife, Kathy, and a special son-in-law, Douglas M. "Mack" Sheriff, all of Greenville; two stepsons, Joseph C. "Chris" Owings and Frederick W. "Woody" Owings and his wife Paula, all of Blue Ridge; seven grandchildren, Kim Gray, Allison Sheriff, Jennifer, Chris and Mike Thackston, all of Greenville, and Katie and Anna Owings of Blue Ridge and one great- grandson, Jonathan Gray of Greenville. Also surviving are sisters, Eunice T. Gilbert and Maxine T. Cartee and a brother, Carl R. Thackston of Greenville and a brother, William M. Thackston of Belvedere. He was predeceased by a sister, Gwendolyn T. Jamison.

He was a member of Dunean Baptist Church, a Life Member of Alvin L. Wilson Chapter 1 D.A.V., James F. Daniel Post #3 American Legion, Walden Masonic Lodge #274, Scottish Rite Temple and Hejaz Shrine Temple.

He was a World War II veteran, a member of the 747 Tank Battalion attached to the 29th Infantry Division. He participated in the Normandy Invasion in France on D-Day and served in England, Holland and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Four Battle Stars.

He was a 1940 graduate of Parker High School.

Lila Ruth Seigler Godfrey, 90, of Summit Place, formerly of Taylors and Greenville, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late John Washington and Hattie Ward Seigler and the widow of Thomas Clifton Godfrey Sr. She was a graduate of Parker High School and owned and operated Palmetto Realty Company. She was the first female real estate broker to own her own company in South Carolina.

Mrs. Godfrey was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church, the Fannie Parks Sunday School Class and was past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army.

Surviving are two sons, Lloyd C. Godfrey of Fountain Inn and J. Gary Godfrey of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Clifton Jr.

Dorothy Orr Jones Campbell, 86, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Asheville, N.C.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Harry B. and Mary Mildred Orr Jones, and a graduate of Parker High School.

She was a retired bookkeeper for the Greenville Association for the Retarded, and a member of St. Andrews Evangelical Church, Columbia.

Surviving are two daughters, Gayle C. Guest of Greenville, and Andrea C. O'Neal and her husband Reams, of Asheville; two sisters, Marian P. Hackney of Greenville, and Martha J. Tiffany of Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Robert Warren Jones, of Greenville; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Claire O'Neal.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred J. Hall; and a brother, Harry B. Jones Jr.

Born in Westminister, she was a daughter of the late John Ester and Olive Willis Waldrop. She was a graduate of Parker High School, a homemaker and a member of Dunean Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Allen Gilbert Tennis Sr.; three sons, Allen G. Tennis Jr. of Easley, John M. Tennis M.D. of Greenwood and Timothy J. Tennis of Greenville; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Waldrop Sylvester and June Waldrop of Greenville, and Jean Waldrop Thomas of Taylors; and a brother, Harold "Cy" Waldrop, of Emerald Isle, N.C.

Sarah Inman Broadnax Rivers, 85, of 1110 Marshal Road, died Sept. 25, 2002.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Judge E. and Margaret Schiffley Inman.

Mrs. Rivers was a graduate of Greenville Woman's College, and did graduate work at Peabody University. She was a member of ZetaSophia and Kappa Delta Gamma Sorority. She was a retired public school teacher, having taught at Parker High School for forty years, and was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church in Greenwood.

Surviving are three sisters, Caroline Inman Crain of Travelers Rest, Billie Brissey Robertson of Greer and Essie Pearl I. Spearman of West Columbia; one stepdaughter, Nell Rivers Hill; one stepdaugher-in-law, Anne Rivers Brooks; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, A.B. Broadnax; and her second husband, Dr. D.M. Rivers; her brother, George Inman; and her sister, Mary Inman Hendrick.

Services will be Saturday, at 11 a.m., at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with the Rev. Barry Cannon officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Sara Sizemore Burnette, Greenville
Sara Sizemore Burnette, 87, of Homewood at Cleveland Park, formerly of 134 Broughton Drive, died peacefully May 18, 2002.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Julia Sizemore, and the widow of Joseph Duncan Burnette, to whom she was happily married for over 40 years.

She was a member of Triune United Methodist Church, the 39ers, and the Sans Souci Study Club.

Sara was a graduate of Parker High School, attended Winthrop University and for over 30 years was owner/operator of Northgate Beauty Salon. There she provided not only shampoos and sets, but healthy doses of good humor. She loved to laugh!

Sara's wisdom, graceful acceptance of change, and love for others, enriched the lives of family and friends. Those in whose hearts she will remain ever present include her three children, Emaline Burnette, Dr. Joseph Duncan Burnette Jr., his wife Carolyn, Mary Ellen Burnette Ellenburg and her husband Dale. She leaves six treasured grandchildren, Dr. Derek and Amanda Van Veen, Cindie Burnette Reidinger, Tripp Burnette, Lynn Ellenburg Burns and Melissa Ellenburg. Three great-grandchildren, Alexander Maloney and Alexis and Evan Burns brought her great joy. Sara's great faith in God and in the potential of those she loved was a source of constant encouragement to all.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with the Rev. Joan Merck officiating. Entombment will follow at the Garden of Faith Mausoleum at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Joseph Daniel Gosnell, Greenville 
Joseph Daniel "Dan" Gosnell, 83, of 725 Quail Run-Swansgate, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville, he was a sonof the late James Malcomb and Willie Bell Bradshaw Gosnell. He was a graduate of Parker High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II European Theatre in Italy, was a staff sergeant in the 12th Medical Depot Company, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason at Walden Lodge, a member of Greenville Lions Club, The American Legion – James F. Daniel Post 3 — and the Greenville Country Club.

Mr. Gosnell was the retired owner of Gosnell Opticians. After working 20 years in the optical wholesale business, he started his own retail business in 1957. He was past president of South Carolina Association of Opticians, past member of South Carolina Board of Examiners, past president of Southeastern Opticians Association and South Carolina Optician of the Year Award. He was the first group selected to the National Academy of Opticianary's Hall of Fame. There are three awards given annually in his honor, one for South Carolina, one for the Southeast and a national award. Twice chairman of the American Board of Opticians, he was awarded "Master in Ophthalmic Optics". He, too, was credited for helping compile the test administered to those planning to enter the field of opticianary. This endeavor was both on a state and national level.

An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and formerly taught the David Reese Sunday School class.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Doris Kathryn Boling Gosnell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Gosnell and Barry McLaurin Joye, of Lexington, and Marilyn Gosnell and Thomas Charles Gower III, of Greenville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Bruce and Kay Greer Gosnell, David Phillip and Carol Bindewald Gosnell and Larry D. Gosnell, all of Greenville, and John Andrew Gosnell of Hendersonville, N.C.;a sister, Esther Gosnell Johnson, of Ashboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Laurin Joye Brooks, Derek Joseph Joye, Charles Craig Gosnell, Mark Andrew Gosnell, Joseph Daniel Gosnell, Meagan Gower Vanzant, Brendan Caldwell Gower, John Andrew Gosnell II, Justin Palmer Gosnell, Allison Marie Gosnell and Amy Kathryn Gosnell; and four great-grandchildren. William Gary Aiken, Greenville 
Mr. William Gary Aiken, 79, husband of Margaret Tinsley Aiken, of 116 Central Court, died Friday, July 5, 2002.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late William Ernest and Martha Mattie Crow Aiken. He was a graduate of Parker High School and was retired from Delta Woodside. Mr. Aiken worshipped at Leawood Baptist Church and attended the Men's Bible Class. He was a Mason, Brandon Lodge. A U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, he took part in Operation Tiger and in the invasion of Normandy, Utah Beach.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Phyllis McConnell and her husband, Gary of Greenville; granddaughter, Alison Garrard of Grand Prairie, Texas; grandson, Jonathan McConnell and his wife, Suzanne of Greenville; sisters, Virginia Aiken, Juanita Campbell and Doris Hines; brothers, Joe Aiken and Michael Aiken. He was predeceased by four sisters, Ruby Aiken, Eva Heaton, Aleen Jeffeaux and Viola Cobb; a brother, Mabry Aiken.

Harold M. Ballew, Seneca
Harold M. Ballew, 89, of Seneca, husband of the late Mamie Sheppard Ballew, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Mariner Health Care in Seneca.

Mr. Ballew was born in Greenville, on July 3, 1910. Prior to retiring in 1971 and moving to Seneca in 1978, Mr. Ballew had a varied career in textiles for 28 years prior to going into Foreign Service for the United States in 1953. He has lived in seven foreign countries, visited 41 countries, and has traveled around the world four times. Mr. Bal lew graduated from Parker High School in 1928 and was a Clemson College graduate, Class of 1932.

Mr. Ballew began his career at Monaghan Mill in Greenville at the age of 14 where he worked as a sweeper and worked his way up to loom fixer. In 1941 he started teaching math and textiles at Parker High School in Greenville. Mr. Ballew then headed up veterans training after World War II for returning servicemen.

During his time working in Foreign Service, Mr. Ballew was Technical Director for the State Department's International Cooperative Administration. He had tours of duty in Brazil, Iran, Turkey, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

During the 1930's and 40's Mr. Ballew was an active member of Monaghan United Methodist Church in Greenville where he formerly served as Sunday School Treasurer and as a member of the Building committee.

Survivors include two sons, Harold "Mac" Ballew Jr. of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Bobby Ballew of Seneca. Grandchildren include Mary Allison Mullis of Aiken, Leslie Ballew of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Harold M. "Hal" Ballew III of Tallahassee, Fla., and Bobby Ballew II of Ellaville, Ga., and great-grandchildren, Bobby Ballew III and Lance Ballew both of Seneca and William Ballew of Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Ballew is also survived by a brother, Jack W. Ballew of Greenville.

Graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oconee Memorial Park with Dr. William "Buddy" Phillips officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 - 8 p.m. Monday at Seneca Mortuary and at other times will be at 219 Apollo Drive, Seneca.

Ollie S. Childress, Greenville
Mrs. Ollie Lucille Smith Childress, 92, of 538 Crestwood Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001.

Born July 10, 1908, in Greenville, S.C., she was a daughter ofthe late Charles S. and Rosa Babb Smith and wife of the late John R. Childress. She was a 1924 graduate of Parker High School where she was a cheerleader and wrote the Parker High fight song. Mrs. Childress represented Parker High School in the State Expression contest where she received distinction as the most proficient student in the school as a debater and in history. She attended Greenville Women's College and was a former Associate Woman's Editor and feature writer of The Greenville Piedmont and was also an account executive in display advertisement for The Greenville News.

Mrs. Childress served as president of the San Souci Study Club, Hillandale Acres Community Club, Clarice Wilson Garden Club, Greenville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Greenville County Council of Woman's Clubs, South Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, South Carolina Federation of Woman's Clubs, and the Southeastern Region of General Federation of Woman's Clubs.

She was founder of the Progress Foundation of S.C. Federation of Woman's Clubs. She also served on the Board of Directors of Sarah Simpson Gossett Home, Greenville Woman's Club, Girl Scouts, Auxiliary of Greenville General Hospital, Greenville Mental Health Association and the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs. Mrs. Childress was also appointed by the governor to the First Highway Safety Committee and was named Clubwoman of the Year of Greenville County in 1960.

She was a member of Earle Street Baptist Church where she served as director of the Young People's Department in Sunday School, leader of Royal Ambassadors, president of the Women's Missionary Union and Sunday School teacher.

Mrs. Childress is survived by six nieces, Patricia Hendrix Ballew (Mrs. Ray C.) of Greenville, Anne Hendrix Cobb (Mrs. Paul W.) of Columbia, Hope C. Sears (Mrs. Dale) of Lilburn, Ga., Joyce C. Malphrus (Mrs. Wofford) of Ridgeland, Louise T. Scott of Florence and Evelyn T. Forrest; a number of great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.


Memorials may be made to Earle Street Baptist Church, 225 W. Earle St., Greenville, SC 29609 or to a charity of one's choice.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown with visitation prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. with the Rev. Neil Cochran officiating. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Committal will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Remembrance Chapel.

Lillian P. Harris, Greenville
Lillian Theodora Prince Harris, 85, formerly of Batesville Community, died March 29, 2002, in Lafayette, La.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Theodore Lewis and Charlstie Brooks Prince, and the widow of Benjamin Samuel Hampton Harris Jr. She was a graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1934, and managed retail shops in Greenville and Pelzer. Mrs. Harris was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Harris Sorkin, the former Miss S.C. of 1967, and her husband, Michael, of Palm Beach, Fla.; a son, Michael Prince "Butch" Harris and his wife, Anne DeBaillon of Lafayette, La.; a sister, Stella Prince Wall of Pelzer; a brother, Tom A. Prince of Fredrick, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Hampton Harris III.

Visitation 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.

Carl 'Pete' Floyd Jr., Easley
Mr. Carl "Pete" Floyd Jr., 79, of 103-D Fairway Oaks Lane, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital after a long and valiant struggle with a chronic illness.

Born in Belton, Dec. 30, 1920, to Carl and Maude Lomax Simmons Floyd. Pete grew up in the Piedmont area. He attended Parker High School where he excelled in sports, particularly football. He then matriculated at Clemson, where he held the state freestyle swimming record for several decades.

He studied engineering before pursuing his lifelong love of flying in the Army Air Corps. As a major in the 498th B-29 Bombardment Group, he flew 30 missions over Japan. He was a decorated veteran earning, among other honors, the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

Following the war, he began a long career as captain and check pilot with Eastern Air Lines, interrupted briefly when he once again served his country and humanity by flying in the Berlin Airlift.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Easley and the Coley Cleveland Sunday School Class. Mr. Floyd was a member of American Legion Post 52 in Easley.

Surviving are his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 57 years, Margaret Louise Howard Floyd of the home; a daughter, Pam Floyd of San Antonio, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Tim and Buff Floyd of Belview, Idaho; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Ann Floyd of Greenwood, and Bill and Jerry Floyd of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Maude F. "Maxie" and William E. Powell of Carolina Beach, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Sara Floyd Shutterworth of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and five grandchildren, Ambriel Floyd of New York City, Jessie Floyd, and Carl "Piper" Floyd IV, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jonathan Noble and Rachael Noble, both of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Floyd goes to join his eldest son, Carl "Bo" Floyd III, who predeceased him by 12 years. He loved and was loved by many people who will miss him greatly.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Easley, with the Rev. Dr. Lloyd Batson and the Rev. Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, one hour prior to the service, in the narthex of the church.

Frank Eppes , Greenville
Frank Eppes, the youngest son of James Frank Eppes and Vena Adams Eppes, passed away early Thursday morning in Greenville, South Carolina.

Judge Eppes was born Nov. 28, 1922. He was a life-long member of Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He was President of the Student Body at Parker High School in 1940. He postponed his graduation until 1941, however, in order to be on the first Parker football team to beat Greenville High. (He did not play in the game). He attended the University of South Carolina before the war and played freshman football. He was drafted in 1943, and entered the United States Army Air Force, where he served in England throughout World War II, and after the war in Switzerland. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1950. While at the University of South Carolina, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Blue Key and the Euphradian Literary Society. In 1949, while still in college, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served there until 1962. He was a member of the Citadel Board of Visitors for 10 years, and was also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Medical University of South Carolina for ten years. He was chairman of the South Carolina House Committee on Municipal, Military and Public Affairs. In 1962, he was elected resident judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, which includes Greenville and Pickens Counties. He served in that position from 1962 until 1985, holding court in each circuit in the state at least twice. He loved traveling across South Carolina, holding court and seeing his many friends. During that period he served two terms as President of the South Carolina Trial Judges Association. In 1985, he retired in order to run for governor. Thereafter, he returned to the service of the State. From 1985 until 2000 he continued to work throughout the State as a circuit judge, sitting by special designation. For over a decade he was an active jockey and crowd-pleaser at the Aiken Triple Crown Harness Races in Aiken, South Carolina. After his retirement, horses, family and friends continued to keep him busy.

Judge Eppes is survived by his wife, Frankie; his son, Frank; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Betsy) and Steve Thackston; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Sarah; his daughter, Martha Cary (Missy); his sister and brother-in-law, Martha Cary and Crom Lennon; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jenks; his sister, Mary Ann; seven grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and a dozen nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 741 Cleveland St., Greenville, from 6 to 9 tonight, Aug. 30. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m., at Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

WHEREAS, after serving as a state representative for 14 years Judge Frank Eppes served as a Circuit Court judge from 1962 to 2000; and

WHEREAS, Judge Frank Eppes dedicated his career to the citizens of the State of South Carolina, and was beloved as a jurist, mentor, public servant, and friend; and

WHEREAS, funeral services for Judge Frank Eppes will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2002.

John Andrew Stafford Sr., Mauldin 
John Andrew Stafford Sr., 76, of Sunrise Assisted Living, formerly of 202 Central Ave., Mauldin, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002.

Born in Greenville County, hewas a son of the late Walter and Anna Hatcher Stafford, and widower of Cynthia Faye Stafford. He was a graduate of Parker High School Class of 1943, Furman University Class of 1951, and was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was retired form Southern Bell after 33 years, and was past president of CWA. He was a member of The Masonic Lodge and New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are four children and their spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Kin and Andrea Fine, Mr. and Mrs. David and Becky Orders, Mr. and Mrs. John Andrew Jr. and Marcia Stafford, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Vicki Reid; 11 grandchildren, Cynthia and Amy Hutto, Jennifer Fain, Brian Williams, Derek and Matthew Orders, Brooke, Drew and Molly Stafford, and Tony and Andy Reid; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Stafford Smith and Barbara Stafford Shepard; and many beloved family members. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by six brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation will be held Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church, at the intersection of Woodruff Road and Highway 14, with the funeral to begin at 1:30 p.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Carlos Watson, with graveside services to follow at Graceland East Memorial Park.

David S. Boyd, Greenville 
David S. Boyd, 87, of Rolling Green Village, formerly of 209 Merrifield Drive, died Sunday, July 14, 2002.

Born Feb. 8, 1915, in Union, S.C., he was a son of the late David Albert and Hattie Dove Boyd.

After graduating from Parker High School, he entered Furman University where he was a math and physics major. He graduated with honors. He served in the U.S. Navy on the naval aircraft carrier the S.S. Bennington. He was retired from Anchor Post Products, was a member of Quarterian Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Harriet Boyd Funk and her husband, John; his son, David S. Boyd Jr. and his wife, Emily Tribble, both of Greenville; a brother, James Haynsworth Boyd of Pendleton; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Sandle Boyd of Greenville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Lucille Brown Boyd and a son, Daniel Brown Boyd.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park with Dr. Randolph Kowalski officiating. The family will receive friends today from 7 until 8:30 at The Mackey Mortuary.

Harold William Hawkins,
Fair Play
Harold William Hawkins, 75, of 151 Wilderness Road, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and a night in which God's comforting hand was clearly present, found rest with his Lord. His brave struggle ended in the early hours of Sept. 10, 1999, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The son of the late Harve and Elizabeth Hamby Hawkins, he was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Walhalla, S.C. He graduated from Parker High School in 1943, where he excelled in both academics and athletics and was named to "Who's Who in America." After high school, he was proud to serve his country in World War II on the Island of Guam as a member of the "SeaBees," the road and airstrip engineering branch of the U.S. Navy.

Upon completion of his military service, he attended Erskine College in Due West, S.C., where he was a Mathematics major with a minor in Science and played tight end for the football squad. He graduated Erskine College in 1949, and soon after moved to Seneca. For the past 45 years, he was the owner of Harold Hawkins Land Surveyors in Seneca and until his death, was the oldest active land surveyor in South Carolina.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jane Hawkins of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Lamar and Ralph Bronson of Seattle, Wash., Holly and Jim McCall of Seneca, Lisa and Tony Chapman of Liberty, Genia and Chip Bryant of Liberty, and Tammy and Scott Lawing of Seneca; sons, Scott Hawkins of Greenville and Greg Hawkins and his wife, Melissa, of Clemson; grandchildren including, Elliott Maines, Carrie McCall, Marly Ellenburg, Benji Pilgrim, Dusty Hawkins, and Savannah Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Dylan McCall, Brady Ellenburg; friend and former wife, Trudy Hawkins; and innumerable friends including his special "little girl" Josie. His close friend, Nikki Ray, predeceased him.

Graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Oconee Memorial Park with his "buddy" and counselor, the Rev. Michael Willis officiating.

The family will receive friends today at Seneca Mortuary on Highway 123 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Joe M. Granger of Atlanta, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Francis Granger, of Atlanta; a son, Joe Granger Jr., of New York City; a daughter, Elizabeth Granger, of Atlanta; grandsons, Collin and Ryan Granger; a sister, Bobbie Weber; and brothers, Bud and Frank Granger, all of Greenville.

Harvey Jack King, 67, of
6 Kingsley Court, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Born in
Greenville, he was a son of the late Malcolm G. and Annie Lee Granger King. He was manager for International Sales for J.D. Hollingsworth on Wheels before retirement.

Mr. King was a member of Grove Road Baptist Church and was a Mason with Empire Lodge. He served as a military policeman with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Jones King; a son and daughter-in-law, H. Jack King Jr. and Tina King, of Greenville; three grandchildren, Justin, Nathan and Olivia King; sisters, Helen King, Maude Watson, Inez King and Alma Bierwirth, all of Greenville; and a brother, Claude King, of Greenville.

Joe Dacus Brown, 69, of 32 Templewood Drive, died Saturday, May 4, 2002.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Troy and Iva Stokes Brown.

Mr. Brown graduated from Parker High School in 1951 and attended UCLA. He retired with PYA as a salesman and worked part-time at Millstone Golf Course. He was a Mason with the Judson Lodge.

He served in the National Guard for 12 years and was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jo Brown of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Michael Nix of Pelzer, Susan and Eddie Hamilton of Greenville; two sons, Roger Brown and wife, Pam of Mauldin, Michael Brown of Greenville; a brother, Tommy Brown of Greer; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Northwest Chapel with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dorothy Colguitt Curry Hedger, 81, formerly of 206 Edgewood Drive.

Born in Sandy Cross, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Julian and Florence Furcron Colguitt. She was a graduate of Parker High School, and was a sales and customer representative with Perrigo before her retirement. Mrs. Hedger was a member of Laurens Road Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Leland Hedger, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Danny James, of Greer; and three grandchildren, Robert, Matthew and Michael James.

Leonard Lee Farmer, 94, widower of Mary Pauline Miller Farmer, formerly of The Inn at Laurens, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at National Health Care.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Archibal and Ella Marjorie Simpson Farmer. He was a retired employee of Steel-Heddle, was a graduate of Parker High School, and attended North Greenville Academy.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Gladys M. Simpson of Laurens and Lucille M. Cassidy of Hawaii; and a number of nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today, July 8, 2002, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Eugene L. Curry.

The family will be at the home of Jim and Ellen Simpson, 402 Forest Drive, Laurens.

William G. Hinton, Greenville
William Goldsmith Hinton, 59, of 18 Simmons Court, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of Mae Dell Banister and the late Samuel Walter Hinton. He was a graduate of Parker High School and retired from Steel Heddle. He was a member of Wrenn Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Lois Raines Hinton; a daughter, Patty H. Hardin of Brevard, N.C.; sons, William Steve Hinton and Robert Dale Hinton of Greenville; a brother, Samuel W. Hinton Jr. of Piedmont; grandchildren, Sandra Kay Hardin and Summer and Brandon Hinton; two nieces; and a nephew. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Kay Hinton.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Service: 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel. Burial: Mt. Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Charles Ligon Crenshaw Jr., Greenville 
Charles Ligon Crenshaw Jr., 81, of 7 Pemberton Drive, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Oakmont Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was the husband of Gladys Rochester Crenshaw, and son of the late Charles Ligon Crenshaw Sr. and Ina Elizabeth Price Crenshaw.

Mr. Crenshaw was a 1940 graduate of Parker High School, and for 30+ years he served with the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. He was owner of Charlie's Machine Shop and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Greenville First Ward.

Mr. Crenshaw co-founded with Benny Campbell the "Southern Guns of Thunder", and for many years had built and fired cannons at concerts at Furman University, Brevard Music Center and at other concerts throughout the South.

In addition to his wife of 60 years he is survived by daughters, Jeannie Crenshaw Bowers and husband David, of Simpsonville, and Mary Crenshaw "Tiger" Reeves and husband Keith, of Greenville; a son, Charles L. Crenshaw III and wife Patti, of Greenville; a sister, Inez Barbaeri, of New York state; granddaughters, Beth Covil, Angie Chambers, Amy Boyer, Abbey Reeves and Kelsey Crenshaw; a grandson, Charles Ligon "Chas" Crenshaw IV; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by sisters, Othella Jamison, Marie Brown and Mary Timmons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Thomas Mcafee Funeral Home, Northwest.

Donald A. Nelson, 61, of 204 Murphy Road, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of L.R. "Buster" Nelson of Seneca, and the late Josephine Alexander Nelson. He was a graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1958. He was retired from Bigelow Carpet Co. and was a courier for St. Francis Hospital. He was a Methodist.

Mr. Nelson was a member of Monaghan Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Temple of the Shrine, a charter member of South Greenville Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #749, and Pilgrim Degree of Merit, Loyal Order of the Moose. He coached Youth Ball with West Gantt and Carolina Youth and was a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Charlotte Straub Nelson; a daughter, Carla E. Nelson of Belton; and a son, Airman 1st Class, Kevin M. Nelson of Spanghdalen, Germany.

Robert Landreth, West Columbia

Mr. Landreth died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Clyde Charles and Mildred Riggins Landreth. He was a member of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church. Mr. Landreth was a graduate of Parker High School in Greenville, attended Furman University and graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina. He was a Shriner and Mason, a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and held an Extra Class in Ham Radio. Mr. Landreth was retired from South Carolina Employment Security Commission after 27 years with the state, and also worked for the former governor's staff.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Carol Jones Landreth, of West Columbia; daughters and son-in-law, Karen Paige Landreth of Greenville, and Susan Elizabeth and John Mark Williams of Lexington; sister and brother-in-law, Janice Miller and Steven Simpson, of Easley; numerous nieces and nephews; and dogs, Sam, Spencer and Bennett.

Edith Craig Sammons, Cleveland
Edith Craig Sammons, 89, of 1015 Moody Ridge Road, formerly of Fairview Drive, Paris Mountain, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000.

Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Josephine Craig and the widow of H. Lloyd Sammons. She was a graduate of Parker High School and retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. after 34 years of service.

Mrs. Sammons was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church where she was active in all phases of church work as her health permitted, and was a life member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of Telephone Pioneers.

Surviving are daughters, Cynthia S. Hall of Moncks Corner and Mrs. Charles (Elaine) Dearman of the home; a son, the Reverend Hugh Lloyd Sammons of Flat Rock, N.C.; a twin sister, Edna C. Barbare of Traveler Rest; a brother, Rudolph Craig of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Irene Stephens, Mable Cartee and Olga Townsend; and brothers, Arthur, Marion and Lamar Craig.

Ola Mae Nelson Armes, Greenville
Ola Mae Armes, 78, of 702 Pine Creek Drive, died Jan. 12, 2001.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Emma Pittman Nelson.

Mrs. Armes was a graduate of the 1939 class of Parker High School. Before her marriage, she worked as a cloth booker at Union Bleachery, Greenville, and after marriage was a housewife. She was a member of Parisview Baptist Church and the Auditorium Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband, Leadus R. Armes, Sgt. Major USMC Retired; two daughters, Susan L. Caylor and Donna K. Harvley, both of Greenville; a son, William G. Armes of Greenville; and five granddaughters, Lura Lee and Amanda Caylor, Kimberly and Stacey Coonan, and Emily Armes, all of Greenville.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Nelson.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with Dr. Ansel McGill officiating. Burial will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

Dorothy Colguitt Curry Hedger, 81, formerly of 206 Edgewood Drive.

Born in Sandy Cross, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Julian and Florence Furcron Colguitt. She was a graduate of Parker High School, and was a sales and customer representative with Perrigo before her retirement. Mrs. Hedger was a member of Laurens Road Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Leland Hedger, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Danny James, of Greer; and three grandchildren, Robert, Matthew and Michael James.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Henry Clyde and
Pauline Womble Harrison. He was a graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1946 and attended Furman University. He was retired from Geer Drugs and was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church.

Surviving are sisters, Frances H. Ray, Mrs. Andy (Elizabeth) Baker and Mrs. Clarence (Carolyn Lee) Ellis, all of Greenville, and Margaret H. Shenk of Lanham, Md., and brothers, William R. Harrison, C. Wyman Harrison, and Henry C. Harrison, Jr., all of Greenville, and John M. (Mac) Harrison of Powdersville. He was predeceased by sisters, Mildred Lollis and Dorothy Floyd.

Fred Walter Ellis Jr., Greenville 
Fred Walter Ellis Jr., 78, husband of Joyce Howard Ellis, of 405 Crestwood Drive, died July 31, 2001.

Born in Monaghan Community of Greenville, he was a son of the late Fred Walter and Bessie Alice Anderson Ellis.

Mr. Ellis was a 1941 graduate of Parker High School. He played on Monaghan Textile Basketball team in the Southern Textile Basketball Tournament. From March 1943 until May 1946, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the USS General William Mitchell and the USS General Weigel. He served in the European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic, Pacific and American Theaters of Operations and the Philippine Liberation.

After graduation from Bright's School of Floral Design, Chicago, Ill., he and his wife owned and operated Sans Souci Flower Shop from 1951 until 1975. Active in this industry, he served as President, and 1st and 2nd Vice-President of the South Carolina Florists' Association, Inc. As a member of the Southern Retail Florist Association, Southeastern Florists' Association, Society of American Florist, Florists' Telegraph Delivery, and Florists Transworld Delivery and its Membership Committee, he contributed to the continued success of the industry. He was a founding member and President of Greenville Allied Florists' Association and Piedmont Area Florist Council.

In 1969, he received "Designer of the Year" award at the Mid-Pacific convention of Florist Transworld Delivery Association. He was a member of Greenville Junior Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Men's Garden Club, Historic Greenville Foundation, Friends of the Hunley, James F. Daniel Post No. 3 American Legion, and Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church.

Upon retirement, he served as Chairman of the Greenville County Recreation Department Commission and as a volunteer at Grady Hipp Nursing Home, Old Exchange Building and Tamassee DAR School. He was a charter member of Clark Hill Fishing Club and also enjoyed all sports.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and sons-in-law, Tommie Ellis and Ron C. Reece of Greenville, and Ginger Ellis and Randy Boatright of Isle of Palms; a grandson, Brad A. Reece; and a sister, Ruth Ellis McCall.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jack Howard "Mickey" Ellis.


 

Helen M. Friddle, Greenville
Helen M. Friddle, born Dec. 11, 1921, died Oct. 19, 2000.

She was a lifelong resident of Greenville County. The daughter of Sampey L. Mullinax and Narcissus Allen Mullinax, she was a member of the pioneer families of Greenville County and of Henderson County, North Carolina.

Mrs. Friddle graduated from Parker High School and completed two years of technical training. She then worked in business for five years prior to being employed by the Probate Court of Greenville County with Guy Gullick, Probate Judge.

She entered on duty in the office of the United States Attorney, Greenville, May 20, 1957, and completed 37 years of continuous service May 20, 1994.

During service with the United States Attorney, she completed various training programs sponsored by the Department of Justice, Washington, D.C., the Civil Service Commission with Paralegal Institute of Philadelphia, and the Antioch School of Law. She received the Paralegal degree from the Antioch School of Law and the Department of Justice, with a special honor, the Dean's Award. Mrs. Friddle also completed numerous classes at Furman University and Greenville Technical College that provided further training and personal enrichment.

She was active in community affairs, serving in both local and state PTA offices. She was a member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society and expert in historical research. She was also a member of Earle Street Baptist Church, where she has served as Women's Missionary Union President.

Mrs. Friddle was predeceased by her husband, William J. Friddle, whom she married in 1943; her brother, Lloyd Mullinax of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Hardin. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Ann Friddle of the home and Linda Friddle Hardin of Greenville; and a grandson, Eugene Ramsey Hardin IV.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. James G. Wooten. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Nelson 'Bill' Matheson, Long Creek
Nelson "Bill" Matheson, age 94, of 150 Matheson Road, Long Creek, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Mariner Health Care.

Born in Oconee County on June 25, 1906, Mr. Matheson was a member of Long Creek Baptist Church and served as deacon several years and taught Sunday School. He attended Long Creek Academy and was a graduate of Parker High School in Greenville, S.C., Class of 1925; he attended Furman University and taught school for a short time before traveling to Detroit in his T-Model Ford to find his fortune in the building business with his brother, Harold. This venture was short lived and he returned to his Long Creek home and married his beloved Elloree Denny in 1929.

"Bill" was in the lumber business, farming and was a merchant and pioneer apple grower. He was Postmaster for 9 years, retiring in 1968 concluding 52 years of Matheson's postal service following his father and brother. Mr. Matheson helped organize the Long Creek Community Club and served as its president for 19 years, and helped organize the first S.C. Apple Festival in 1962 and received Apple Grower of the Year award in 1968. He was also a member of the Westminster Masonic Lodge #200 AFM.

Mr. Matheson is the last survivor of his family of seven. He is survived by daughter, Bobbie Matheson Cullen of Palm Harbor, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Matheson was preceded in death by his wife, Elloree Denny Matheson and son, Kenneth Matheson; parents, George W. and Mary Ann Shedd Matheson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2001, from the chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Cannon and John McKnight officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Creek Baptist church Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Sue Hinton, 80, of 925 Cleveland St., Greenville, widow of C.W. Hinton, died June 22, 1999.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Milton Wales and Minnie Ethel McCall. She was a graduate of Parker High School and Draughon's Business College.

She retired from Sears as Credit Manager.

Sue was an active member of First Baptist Church of Greenville and the Loyalty Sunday School Class.

She was a former member of the Greenville Woman's Club and The Wade Hampton Garden Club and The Bridge Club.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Marlene Foster of Easley; two grandchildren, Joey Foster of Taylors and Shannon Foster Ballew and her husband, Alan, of Easley; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Addison Ballew.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of nine children.

Funeral services for Sue will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with Dr. Baxter Wynn officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Mausoleum, Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Hayden Lloyd and Veattie Miller Minton. She was a graduate of Parker High School and was a former employee of Stewart-Marett, Edens-Estes, Fred Pettigru and Jerry Brockman Clothiers. She was a member of Edgewood Church of Christ.

He worked for WundaWeve and Brookline Carpet, retired from Fur man University and was affiliated with Bagwell Asphalt Company after his retirement.

He graduated from Parker High School Class of 1942 and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Bagwell was a Charter Member of Bethel Baptist Church and attended North Greenville Christian Fellowship Church.

Maurice William McDonald, 78, of 100 Floyd Circle, formerly of Dunean community, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late William Asbury and Lula Aiken McDonald. He was a graduate of Parker High School and was retired from Lawson Products. He was a member of Southwest Greenville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Shelley Kimball McDonald; two daughters, Julia M. Uz and Mertie Lou McDonald, both of Greenville; four sisters, Geneva M. Cheek and Wilma V. Audrey McMahan Capri, 63, of 1506 Wenwood Court, died Sunday, October 29, 2000.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Rhoda Huff McMahan. She was a graduate of Parker High School and was a co-owner of Capri's Italian Restaurant on Augusta Road. She attended Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church.

Surviving are her husband, Guido H. Capri; a brother, James E. McMahan of Greenville; two nieces, Martha McMahan Watson and Jama McMahan Nation; and two nephews, Charles Franklin McMahan and Mark Bates McMahan, all of Greenville. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Fred McMahan.

He was the Founder and Vice President of The Benefit Partners Corporation and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a 1977 graduate of Parker High School where he was the drum major in the marching band. Talmadge Andrew Tollison Jr., 51, of 215 Mountain Crest Drive, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital.

Son of Talmadge Andrew Tollison Sr. of Greenville and the late Elizabeth Harper Tollison. He was a surveyor with South Carolina Department of Transportation. He graduated from Parker High School and USC Columbia. Mr. Tollison was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of Woodside Baptist Church, where he was an ordained deacon.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Wanda G. Tollison; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda Elizabeth Tollison Kuykendall and Darren D. Horace Lafayette Taylor, 77, of Edwards Road, died June 26, 2000.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Robert Lafayette and Theodocia McCall Taylor.

He was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church and a 1940 graduate of Parker High School. He was a master plumber, owner of Taylor Plumbing Co., and a retired plumbing inspector with the Greenville County Codes Department. He served for five years and three months as a staff sergeant, Ordinance Corps, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Corps, and U.S. Air Force.

Carol Denise Jones, 34, of 204 Dukeland Drive, died Thursday, June 1, 2000.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of Caroll and Nancy Simpson Jones of the residence. She was a graduate of Parker High School and Greenville Tech and was an employee of the Greenville Hospital System. Charles Beattie Epps, Greenville 
Charles Beattie Epps, 80, of 104 Lester Ave. died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital.

Husband of Annie Tee Evington Epps, he was born in Marietta, a son of the late James Luther and Maggie Keith Epps.

A 1939 graduate of Parker High School and an avid golfer, he served in the U.S. Air Force in England during World War II, earning the Soldiers Medal, the Victory Medal, Eamet Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a machinist with W.R. Grace Company until his retirement in 1983. His church membership was at Arrington Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons, Jimmy Green and wife, Annette, of Travelers Rest and Tracy Epps and wife, Donna, of Piedmont; a sister, Christine Epps Caldwell of Slater; grandsons, Stacy Green and wife, Tammy, and Regan Green; granddaughters, Alicia Epps and Logan Epps.

He was predeceased by six brothers, James, Wallace, McClure, Ed, and Earl Epps and Toy Cox; and sisters, Willie Brown and Audrey Robertson.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Arrington Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverends Donald E. Cavin, Larry Clifton, and James Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Grand View Memorial Gardens.

Mary Sims Gantt, 78, of 4 Three Forks Court, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999.

A lifelong resident of Greenville, she was a daughter of the late William L. and Marie Bryant Sims. She was a graduate of Parker High School and attended Greenville Woman's College, now Furman University.

Mrs. Gantt was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, the Woman's Club and the Altar Guild.

Surviving are her husband, John T. Gantt Sr.; daughters, Rosemary Gantt of Greenville, and Beth G. Ragsdale of Williamston; sons and daughters-in- law, Tommy Gantt of Charleston, Gary and Nancy Gantt, and Joey and Sharon Gantt of Greenville; a sister, Virginia S. Robert Lee Howard, 87, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Saint Francis Hospital.

A native of Greenville, he was a son of the late William Gladstone and Jan Thompson Howard. Mr. Howard was a graduate of Parker High School and attended Furman University. He was co-owner and operator of Howard Brothers Gulf Station in West Greenville and a member of Brandon Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon, member of the Joy Group, the Robert Glazner Sunday School Class, and was a Sunday School Teacher for over 52 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Howard Kelly of Greenville and Judy Howard Daniel and her husband Billy, of North Augusta; a sister-in-law, Mary F. Howard, of Greenville; four grandchildren, Robert James "Jimmy" Daniel of North Augusta, William Lee Daniel of Thomson, Ga., Steven Howard Kelly of West Union, and Morgan Jan Kelly of Greenville; three great-grandchildren, Robert Daniel, Christopher Daniel and Tyler Daniel, all of North Augusta.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wives, Tululah D. Howard and Hazel M. Howard; his twin sister, Genevieve Howard; a brother, Ernest G. Howard; and a son-in-law, James B. Kelly.

Mr. Arthur McAllister, 81, of 22 Burty Road, died Saturday, April 28, 2001.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late J. Arthur and Lizzie Stancel McAllister. He was a graduate of Parker High School. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, Mr. McAllister was a teacher's aide for eight years at Shriner's Hospital for Children. He was a Mason and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 59 years, Mrs. Dorothy G. McAllister of the home; two daughters, Linda M. and her husband Dr. Juergen Nord of Tampa, Fla., and Becky McAllister of Greenville; grandchildren, Drs. Randy McClellan and Dorothy McClellan-Nord of Gainesville, Fla., and Christoph Arthur and Janelle Nord of Tampa, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Caylyn Nord and A.J. McClellan; sister, Virginia Murray of Greenville; a loving extended family, and many treasured friends. He was predeceased by five brothers, James, Riley, Bolt, Ansel and Carlton.

Christine Jones LeFevre, Easley
Mrs. Ida Christine Jones LeFevre, 86, formerly of Easley, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, in Charleston.

Born in Greenville, Mrs. LeFevre was the daughter of the late John Hamilton and Ida Barton Jones. She graduated from Parker High School, Greenville Women's College, and received a Master's degree in Special Education from Furman University. Mrs. LeFevre was a teacher at Easley High School having taught Latin, French and English until her retirement in 1975. Mrs. LeFevre was a member of Geer Memorial Baptist Church and was an early advocate for the rights of the mentally retarded in Pickens County.

Surviving are two sons, William H. LeFevre of Charleston, and James D. LeFevre of Stuart, Fla.; one sister, Irene Jones Kallam of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren, Beth LeFevre- Hendrix, Paige LeFevre and Alex LeFevre; and one great-grandchild, Eliz abeth Barton Hendrix. Mrs. LeFevre was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Walter H. LeFevre; and a son, John Robert LeFevre.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom M. Jones Jr. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery in Easley.

William Copelan, Raleigh, N.C. 
William Copeland Gilmore Jr., died June 24, 2001, after declining health.

He was born in Greenville to the late William Copeland and LeVegia Miller Gilmore Sr. He graduated from Parker High School in1938, and Clemson College in 1942, following in his dad's footsteps with a degree in Textiles Weaving and Designing. He wed Madeliene O. Thoma, April 14, 1944, then left on the Queen Mary for duty in the European Theater of World War II as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, having served in France and Belgium's Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, Bill and Madeliene built their first home in Abbeville, and worked at Abbeville/Milliken Mills from 1946-1959 in product development, planning, quality control and industrial engineering. From 1960-61 he was Plant Designer for Haynesworth Mills. In 1961 he went to work for Burlington Industries in Raeford, N.C., and Clarksville, Va., as designer, department manager, and in new product development.

In 1975 Bill and Madeliene moved to Durham, N.C., where he assisted her in property management until he began working for North Carolina Employment Security Commission from 1981 until retirement in 1997.

Bill was the ultimate Clemson Tiger fan and in his earlier years, an avid golfer and bowler. He loved reading until loss of eyesight led him to audio books, but nothing was more important than his family.

He is survived by two loving sons, William Daniel Gilmore (Delia S.) of Raleigh, and Kim Raymond Gilmore (Tara P.) of Charlotte; grandchildren, Meredith Gilmore Currin (Justin T.) of Raleigh, William Miller Gilmore (Dargan M.) of Chapel Hill, N.C., Erin Lee Gilmore and Ross Patton Gilmore of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Sellars Dempsey of Alpharetta, Ga., and Madeline Grace Currin of Raleigh; a brother, Lamar Miller Gilmore, of Kannapolis, N.C.; and a sister, Dorothy Gilmore Holder, of Columbia; many wonderful nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Madeliene O. Thoma Gilmore; and a sister, Hazel Gilmore Garren.

Edna Tidwell McElrath, 91, of Powder Springs, Ga., formerly of Greenville, S.C., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.

Mrs. McElrath retired from Belks Department Store in Greenville, a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Greenville, a member of Easley Senior Citizens Center, an avid member of Easley Senior Bowling League, a member of Azalea Lanes Senior Bowling League and an original member of the ladies Parker High basketball team.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Roy McElrath of Powder Springs, Ga., and Mr. Ronald McElrath of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Viola Cathcart of Norfolk, Va.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

William Ronald "Ronnie" Wright, of 328 Butler Springs Road, Greenville, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, after a long battle with cancer.

He was the son of Blanche McClainof 110 Central Court and his stepfather, the late Theo McClain. He was a graduate of Parker High School. He owned and operated R.G.M. Inc. of the Carolinas.

He is survived by his wife, Denise Trembley Wright; and two daughters, Brittany and Jamey Trembley of the home; daughters, Gretchen Wright Mullinax and Brooke Arrowood; a son and friend, Ronald Lance Wright; and grandchildren, Hillary and Eric Mullinax and Alyssa Arrowood. He is also survived by two loving brothers, Mike and David Wright; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

T. Truman Williams, 74, of 110 Hiwassee Drive, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Sidney L. and Laurie Gosnell Williams. He was a graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1944, and attended Furman University. He retired as a postal clerk at Park Place Post Office.

Mr. Williams was a member of Park Place Baptist Church, Sam Poe Lodge No. 284, Hejaz Temple of the Shrine, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys "Jo" Cleveland Williams; a daughter, Janet W. Koss; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Truman Williams Jr. and Kitty Scott Williams; grandchildren, Kathryn and Scott Williams; and two sisters, Evelyn Motte and Carolyn Rucker, all of Greenville. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Gorman Williams.

Margaret Hamrick Clarke, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was born December 14, 1917, in Cramerton, N.C. to Joseph and Lois Hamrick. She was a graduate of Parker High School where she was an outstanding athlete and set many track records. She lived in Greenville for 70 years and was a member of Overbrook Baptist Church and Faith Sunday School Class. She was employed as an insurance agent for Independent Life for 20 years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, James R. Clarke; one daughter, Jimmie Ann Clarke Griffitts; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Susan Clarke; three grandchildren, Scott Asbury, Jayne Asbury Duesterbeck and Taylor Clarke; one great- grandson, Brandon Griffitts; two sisters, Sarah Link and Betty Hiller; one stepbrother, Everette Craddock; three sisters-in-law, Martie Armstrong, Dimmnie Thompson, and Martha Frances (Hank) Lindemann; and many nieces, nephews and great aunts.

Margaret fought a long and courageous battle against cancer. She is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. She will be deeply missed by her friends and loved ones.

Born in Union, she was a daughter of the late Charles Vance and Fannie Marie Miller McCall, and the widow of Lonnie Burdette Denton. She was a graduate of Parker High School and was retired from Southern Weaving. She was a member of East Park Baptist Church and the Mary Coley Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd Bradley Jr. and Jeannie Bradley; a granddaughter, Heather Jean Bradley; and a grandson, Lloyd Earl Bradley III, all of Greenville; a stepmother, Ethel McCall of Greenville; a sister, Elizabeth McCall Weems of Moshiem, Tenn.; and a brother, Charles V. Born in Clark's Creek, Ga., he was a son of the late John C. and Manola Vickery Segars. He was a graduate of Parker High School, was a U.S. Army World War II 101st Airborne veteran, and was retired from J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sandy Segars, of Taylors; four grandsons, Stephen Michael Segars, Nathan Griggs, Seth Griggs and Brady Segars; one granddaughter, Amber Gail Griggs; three sisters, Johnnie Sue Moore of Atlanta, Ga., and Frances and Betty Joe Segars of Texas; and a brother, J.C. Segars, of Atlanta, Ga.

Miss Hiott died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999. Born in Harleyville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late A.Q. and Eula Crosby Hiott. She was a 1939 Graduate of Furman University. She retired from Parker High School as a Physical Education Teacher after 34 years, and was honored as 1975 Teacher of the Year. She was a charter member of Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, was director of Camp Wabak and Camp Graham for 10 years and was a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Greenville. She was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a nephew, David Walker Hiott and his wife, Kaye, and a great niece, Sandi, all of Irmo; and three nieces, Diane, Lori, and Cindy of Tampa, Fla.

Charles Ardell Lindsey, Greenville
Charles Ardell Lindsey, 75, beloved husband of 50 years to Jean F. Lindsey, died July 5, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Jesse Brownlee and Orphia Hunter Lindsey. He was also the stepson of the late Maude Hul lender Lindsey. Charlie was a 1942 graduate of Parker High School and at tended Furman Uni versity. He was a veteran of World War II and was stationed in England.

Charlie retired from the S.C. State Barber Board. He barbered for 60 years. He was also a big sports fan. Charlie was known as "the voice of the Furman Paladins" in the 1960's. He was also the voice of the Greenville Red Sox at Meadowbrook Park. He was a member of the Greenville Rotary Club, the Pleasantburg Lions Club and the Recovery Masonic Lodge No. 31. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 3 and the Greater Greenville Christian Chorale, a singing group. He was a faithful member of McCarter Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Regina "Reggie" and Doug Eargle of Columbia, and Kim and Eddie Beam of Greenville; five grandchildren, Scott and Amy Beam, Charlsye, Katie and Lindsey Eargle; one great-grandson, Hunter Douglas Eargle; a stepsister, Agnes Owings; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Roberta and John Kuykendall, and Bill and Dora Fowler.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mable Lindsey.

 Burial will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

M. Wilson Pace, Greenville
Milton Wilson Pace, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001.

Born in Pickens County, he was the husband of the late Margaret Hazel Hicks Pace and the son of the late James Thomas and Cora Kelly Pace. He was retired engineer with WYFF and a member of Overbrook Baptist Church.

Mr. Pace graduated from Parker High School in 1938 and attended Furman University and the University of Georgia. He was a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers and an instructor in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

Mr. Pace is the last member of his family. He is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in Springwood Cemetery.

Margaret Messer Ball, 69, of 3 Linden Drive, died Oct. 2, 2001, at Laurel Baye Nursing Center.

Born in Lowell, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William Beecher and Mozelle Gibson Messer, and wife of James Burrell Ball. She was a graduate of Parker High School and a retired secretary from Wunda Weave Carpets. She was a member of Leawood Baptist Church and the Bykota Sunday School Class of the church.

Surviving are her husband, James Burrell Ball, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Chuck Paxton; and a son and daughter-in-law, James W. "Jim" and Debbie Ball, all of Greenville; and four grandchildren and their spouses, Kerri P. and husband Brad McAlister, of Greenville, Kristin B. and husband Trey Rollins, of Nashville, Tenn., Jamie Ball and Ryan Ball of Greenville.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late James Robert and Hattie Bishop Summey. He was a graduate of Parker High School and a U.S. Army World War II Air Corps veteran. Mr. Summey was the founder and owner of Lake Forest Carpets. He was a member of the Gamecock Club, IPTAY Member, Home Builder's Association, Kiwanis Club and the No. 1 New York Yankee's fan. He was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Virginia Campbell Summey; two daughters, Gaile S. Mooney of Greenville, and Martha S. Woods and her husband, John of Greenville; a son, James C. Mr. Bill Bullock Bailey, 81, husband of Jeanne Corea Bailey, of 517 Kenilworth Drive, died Nov. 5, 2001.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Silas J. and Marie Polatty Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was a conductor on the Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern) for 44 years. He was a member of United Transportation Union and the Greenville American Legion Post 3. He attended Parker High School, where he played football, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church, the Price Johnson Sunday School Class and was a former Deacon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, John S. and Ann Bailey, of Taylors; one daughter and son-in-law, Bettie and Richard Spencer, of Charleston; a sister, Elizabeth Sizemore, of Enumclaw, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Carole Bailey, of Lexington, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Katherine Bailey, of Greenville; and three grandchildren, Amy Bailey of Lexington, Ky., J. Silas Bailey Jr. of Greenville, and Daniel Spencer of Charleston.

He was predeceased by a son, Bill B. Bailey Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Eunice and B.C. Pressly Jr.; and a brother, Thomas D. Bailey.

Donnie Thomas Pridmore, 59, of 403 S. Almond Drive, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at his residence.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of Thomas R. and Nellie Kellett Pridmore, and the husband of Gayle Carter Pridmore. He was a CPA with Jennings Cook Inc., a graduate of Parker High School and the University of South Carolina, Class of 1965. Mr. Pridmore served in the Army National Guard, was a founding member and past president of the Mauldin Rotary Club, a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of Mauldin United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shanna P. and James Yown of Woodruff; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin T. and Kerin Pridmore of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister and brother-in-law, Nellita P. and Richard DuBose of Summerville; and three grandchildren, Maura Pridmore of Anchorage, Alaska, Braelyn and Hayden Yown, both of Woodruff.

Chip Davis, Anderson
James E. Davis Jr., 37, of 1041 Hickory Lane, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of James E. Sr. and Sylvia Childers Davis. Former employer: Bosch. Graduate: Parker High School.

Survivors: sisters, Teresa D. Lance and Jackie Mitchell, both of Anderson, and Ashley Davis of the home.

Graveside service: 4 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Robert M. "Suitcase" Simpson, 66, of Travelers Rest, son of the late M.L. and Runette Simpson, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital.

He is survived by a son, Mark L. Simpson, of Greenville; a daughter, Ashley M. Simpson, of Powdersville; two granddaughters, Jordan A. Simpson and Ryley C. Simpson; a sister, Ann Swaringen, of Mauldin; and his companion, Gail Pressher.

The body is being sent to MUSC for Medical Research. Memorial services will be at Salem Methodist Church on White Horse Road, tonight, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
